Germaine Lauzon, a Montreal housewife, has caught the first break of her life by winning a million trading stamps. Since the stamps must first be glued into booklets before they can be exchanged for household items from a catalogue, Germaine has invited her friends, neighbours, and sisters to a stamp-pasting party. As Germaine muses about all the wonderful things she will get with her winnings, the other women become increasingly incensed by her sheer audacity in having won such a prize. Les Belles Sœurs picks away at the fine lines between hardship and humour, belonging and loneliness, honesty and rudeness, desire and impropriety, between goodwill and bitter, bitter jealousy.
